Earning My Wings
This black and white photograph captured one of the proudest moments of my life. At just 19, I was a commissioned officer in the Royal Air Force and had been awarded my fighter pilot wings.
Dreaming big, backed by determination and a little bit of ability, had paid off. I had no idea that I was about to begin a journey that would exceed even my wildest of dreams.
Fighter Pilot
I was the youngest pilot ever to join a front line RAF Tornado Squadron. It was both exciting and intimidating. Over the following years, I gained operational experience around the world, eventually becoming Deputy Squadron Commander, trusted to lead complex missions in demanding environments wherever they were needed.
I soon realised that everything I had achieved to that point was only the beginning. The standards were about to rise to an entirely new level.
Leading Under Pressure
I served on the Red Arrows as a wingman, and after a period away from the Team, I was honoured to be invited back as Leader.
I had held many leadership appointments throughout my career, but none as visible, demanding or lonely as this one. Every display, every decision and every performance was judged on the public stage.
As Leader, I was responsible not only for eight fellow pilots, but also for protecting the reputation of the Royal Air Force and the United Kingdom. Success depended on teamwork, trust, relentless preparation and individuals committed to putting the mission before themselves.
Operational Commander & Advisor
Exceptional flying skills alone are not enough. The Royal Air Force expects its senior leaders to make sound decisions, inspire trust and lead under pressure. Following master's level professional education, I was selected to serve in Afghanistan, working within the multinational headquarters as the Senior Air Advisor. I later became Chief of Air Operations, responsible for air operations across the Middle East.
These roles demanded strategic thinking, sound judgement and the ability to make high consequence decisions in complex multinational environments.
I have also worked at UK Government level, advising Ministers and senior military leaders on global security challenges and operational capability development.
Senior NATO Leader
Leaving the Royal Air Force marked the beginning of a new challenge. I joined NATO to lead the delivery of a major multinational programme from concept to reality; working across governments, military organisations and industry partners.
Success wasn't achieved through command, it was achieved through influence.
Building consensus, earning trust and aligning organisations with different priorities became just as important as making decisions.
Personal Insight
People often assume that because I flew fast jets and led the Red Arrows, I'm fearless. The truth is quite the opposite. My greatest fear is spiders, and I have a genuine dislike of standing on the edge of tall buildings. Not quite what you'd expect from a fighter pilot!
If I had to give the 19-year old Jas a piece of advice it would be this. When a decision has to be made, and you're the one responsible for making it, trust your instincts. Gather the facts, listen to others, but when the moment comes, have the courage to decide.
I've changed over the years. The principles never have. Leadership. Trust. Teamwork. Performance.
